O'Week Promotion
This wiki page is dedicated to organising Humbug's effort to promote itself at the Orientation Week at the University Campuses around Brisbane.
The idea is if you have ideas, or can help, or have information, you just edit it. If you don't have an account, you can create one as described in StartHere. Don't worry too much about where to put stuff or how to format - the most important thing is to get it written down so we all know what is going on.
Activities
These are the activities we have planned. They are to be done on O'Week, when the minds of the little darlings are most malleable. O'Week varies depending on the Uni and campus:
- UQ: February 23 - 27.
- QUT Gardens Point: February 17 - 18.
- QUT Kelvin Grove: February 19 - 20.
- Griffith Uni: Uncertain. February 23 - 27 perhaps?
The objectives of these activities are:
Create a general awareness of Humbug, and in particular create the link: Humbug == Open Source in Brisbane.
- Attract members.
- Fulfil an obligation to UQ to provide help to students and staff for open source.
CD Handout at UQ
The initial idea was to burn software onto an inkjet printable CD that a student might find interesting, print a Humbug ad on the front and members of Humbug hand them out to students. This has now evolved somewhat. Last year UQ Connect handed out Microsoft Office CD's to the students. MarcoOstini has contacted them to see if they would be willing to hand out Open Source CD's. The answer was yes! We met someone at the LCA Penguin Dinner who had 1300 odd Open Disc CD's left over from Software Freedom day and was willing to give them to us.
So, the jobs required to get this done are:
- Obtain the CD's.
Person responsible: JamesIseppi
JamesIseppi has been contacted by the person with the CD's, and is arranging transport.
- Artwork for CD's. This will be printed on CD, or printed on a CD sleeve, or printed as a A6 flyer to that is inserted manually into the sleeve.
RussellStuart has made one attempt at this. The format is A6, but could be adapted to the other formats. svgpng A4
Please, RussellStuart ain't no artist. Rescue him from his misery, by either tweaking the above versions or doing something new. If you do this never replace an existing attachment, always create a new one!
- Print A4 versions of flyers (which is just 4 copies of the A6 flyers on one A4 sheet).
Person Responsible: RussellStuart.
- Arrange for A4 pages to be sliced and diced into A6 flyers.
Person Responsible: MatthewFranklin.
Insert A6 flyers & CD's into sleeves. This will be done at a Humbug meeting.
Person organising Humbug CD sleeve stuffing fest: JamesIseppi.
JamesIseppi is also responsible for getting the CD's to MarcoOstini.
- Get finalised CD's to UQ:
Person responsible: MarcoOstini.
- After O'Week get unused CD's off UQ, and return them to Humbug.
Person responsible: MarcoOstini.
- It is possible UQ will need a poster to advertise what they are handing out.
Find out if poster is needed: MacroOstini.
- Produce poster. Help needed!
There are other things that have to be done in house.
- If new members do turn up, we have to be able to make them members - ie have membership cards, and take money.
Person Responsible: El Presidentio - JamesIseppi.
- If newbies turn up, someone has to meet and greet them. So we need a cadre of people willing to put up their hands to do this. Put your names here!
Notice Board Spamming
The idea here is to put a Humbug Flyer up on every possible notice board, so they can't be missed during O'Week. Despite me saying "spam", we will in fact need to ask to put them on some notice boards.
Jobs:
- Produce Artwork for an A4 poster.
RussellStuart has made one attempt at this. svg png (If you want to edit it, you need humbug-banner.png and humbug-platties.png as well.)
Again, RussellStuart ain't no artist. Rescue him by helping out. And again, if you do, always upload a new attachment, don't replace existing artwork!
- Print A4 flyers. I think we can do this ourselves as I can't see us needing more than a ream. Put your name below if you are willing to print some sheets at home, using your own equipment. Add the maximum copies you are willing to do and the type of printer you have. Laserjet printers are preferred, and the inkjet ink can run if the paper gets wet.
RussellStuart. Inkjet. 100 copies.
- Purchase SPAMMING equipment. The equipment required is just a way of attaching the sheets to a notice board or poster site. In other words: buy glue, cork board pins, double sided tape, and bring them along to Humbug.
- Volunteer required!
- The "script". Many notice boards are locked, and others require permission to post to them. We need a "script" a newbie at this can follow when asking permission to use the notice board. Ie something along the lines of: "Hi I am from Humbug, and I want to do you a favour ..." What we need is someone to write the script.
- Volunteer required!
- SPAMMERS! These are the people who are willing to go to the campuses and put up the notices. The prime sites are: Notice boards in Computer Science, Engineering, and Science buildings, and put up posters on the sanctioned poster sites all around the University. You will often have to ask for permission, so this means it is best done during business hours for the notice boards. Poster sites can be done at any time. I have listed the campuses below. If you can help out, put your name and when (times or dates or even better both) under the campus.
- Griffith - Logan.
RussellStuart. Some weekend.
- Griffith - Mt Gravatt.
- Griffith - Nathan.
- Griffith - South Bank.
- QUT - Carseldine.
- QUT - Gardens Point.
- QUT - Kelvin Grove.
- UQ - Ipswich.
- UQ - St Lucia.
- Griffith - Logan.
Lecture Slides
The idea here is to get lecturers to mention Humbug to their classes, or have a slide, or something. Right now it boils down to this: if you personally know a lecturer well enough to ask him to do this then do it and add you name to the list below.
- QUT, Jared Ring
JamesIseppi will contact Jared.
