What
- Humbug is holding a competition for Uni students in SE Queensland.
The prizes are 3 tickets to Linux Conference Australia 2011.
In addition, Humbug and LCA 2011 are offering the chance for an additional 5
students to attend LCA for free if they volunteer to help out. If more students are
interested in this option, more places may be made available.

Why?
Humbug is a computer club based at UQ. We have bid to bring LCA to Brisbane over the last 3 years, and our 2011 bid won.
Why did we do this? Because Humbug is a group of people who think that computers and software are the best toys on the planet, and being paid heaps to make them do new tricks is an added bonus. Linux Conference Australia is one of the greatest meetings of people with similar minds on the planet. Just google worlds best linux conference and you will see what we mean. Going on previous years we are expecting around 700 people to attend, with a good portion of those flying in from overseas.

How to Enter
To enter, turn up to one of the Humbug Meetings.
Dates: Sat 16th of October or Sat the 30th of October.
Times: Any time between 4 PM and 10 PM.
How: Turn up, have a chat, relax, see what we do and once your in the grove have talk to our judges.
You might like to turn up in time to listen in a talk while you are there. They start at 6 PM and usually run for about an hour. After the talks roving packs tend to form, looking for food to sustain them for the rest of the meeting.
Judging

Humbug will appoint the judges who have a strong history of contribution to open source. The prizes will be awarded at the judges sole discretion. One has already been selected:
Anthony Towns who was the Debian Project Leader in 2006/2007.
The judges remit is to find the 3 students who will get the most out of attending LCA. They will be looking for people who:
- Are interested enough about LCA to turn up to a meeting and chat about it.
- Have written stuff that might be cool to share with others an open source.
Are wondering how to (or even have!) set up a computer presence on the web. This might be a home server, or a Google Application, or a Virtual Machine.
- Or want to help us get the technical parts of LCA working - such videoing the conference.
- Or even just want to bring along their computer science assignments so we can all puzzle over them.

About LCA 2011
At LCA 2011 you can expect:
Day long mini conferences, one featuring building and launching your own rockets.
Some keynotes, such as one from Mark Pesce talking about something he co-invented - Virtual Reality Markup Language (VRML).
- And choose from around 80 talks, including:
- Growing food using open source (hacking in your garden with an Arduino).
- Machine learning - using statistical models to find patterns in data.
- Prototyping of physical objects at home using multi-axis CNC milling machines.
- Firewalling using OpenBSD (as found in iStuff).
- Building the worlds first infrastructure-independent mesh mobile telephony system.

- Social events such as the unprofessional delegates networking session, competitions, and free food in the breaks.
- Finishing with an Open day, where we fill a building with open source projects.
