What is it?

Sun Microsystems has supplied funding for one person from every state and territory of Australia to come to Perth for Linux.conf.au 2003. This covers one economy return flight from the closest major airport, plus accommodation at Currie Hall at UWA, and a full Professional registration for the conference. The only thing this doesn't cover is the food you eat (except for the conference dinner).

The Linux.conf.au 2003 organisers have asked HUMBUG to select a delegate for Queensland.

Eligibility

To be eligible for selection as the Queensland Delegate you must meet the following criteria:

  1. You are a resident of Queensland, Australia
  2. You cannot afford the cost of attending the conference
  3. You can demonstrate a contribution (however small, and not necessarily in software) to the Linux/Open Source community

You do NOT have to be a member of HUMBUG to apply. However, LCA 2002 organisers, present HUMBUG office-bearers, and their immediate families are ineligible to apply.

The successful applicant will be expected to deliver a talk about their experience of the conference to HUMBUG. As a result you will be quizzed about your contribution so please be honest.

(We recognise that a talk may not be practical for those outside of Brisbane. If it is impossible to arrange a suitable time for a talk then an email to the HUMBUG mailing list will be accepted in lieu of a talk.)

Applications

Applications may be sent by email to exec@humbug.org.au or by post to "The HUMBUG Secretary, PO Box 6185, St Lucia QLD 4067". Applications must be received by 30 November 2002. Applications must include:

  1. Your name
  2. Your residential address (no P.O. Boxes)
  3. An after-hours contact phone number
  4. A contact email address
  5. A short statement that outlines your contribution to the Linux/Open Source community. The statement should be ideally around 500 words. Please feel free to include supporting URLs.

The information HUMBUG collects will be used only for the selection of a delegate for the programme and will be destroyed after the conference. (We need to keep it until then so we may select another delegate should our first choice be unable to attend.)

Selection and Timeline

We will assess candidates for eligibility based on their applications. The delegate will then be selected at random from these eligible candidates. We have choosen a random draw as the final step because we cannot think of objective criteria for who would 'benefit the most'. Details of the time, place, and result of the draw will be made available via email to all eligible candidates.

The timeline for the competition is:

30 November 2002Applications Close
05 December 2002Draw to select candidate
07 December 2002Linux.conf.au 2003 announces the winners for each state
22 - 25 January 2003Linux.conf.au 2003
post 25 January 2003Present talk to HUMBUG

More information about the conference is available at the linux.conf.au website. Conference and Programme queries should be sent to the conference organisers at lca-organisers@conf.linux.org.au.
