What is it?Sun Microsystems has supplied funding for one person from every state and territory of Australia to come to Adelaide, for Linux.conf.au 2004. This covers one economy return flight from the closest major airport, plus accommodation at St. Mark's College, and a full Professional registration for the conference. The only thing this doesn't cover is the food you eat (except for the conference dinner). The Linux.conf.au 2004 organisers have asked HUMBUG nominate two candidates. The linux.conf.au committee will then select one candidate, as well as a national winner. Apparently, the national winner will receive a really cool additional prize from Sun. EligibilityTo be eligible for selection as the Queensland Delegate you must meet the following criteria:
You do NOT have to be a member of HUMBUG to apply. However, LCA 2004 organisers, present HUMBUG office-bearers, and their immediate families are ineligible. The successful applicant will be expected to deliver a talk about their experience of the conference to HUMBUG. As a result you will be quizzed about your contribution so please be honest. (We recognise that a talk may not be practical for those outside of Brisbane. If it is impossible to arrange a suitable time for a talk then an email to the HUMBUG mailing list will be accepted in lieu of a talk.) ApplicationsApplications may be sent by email to exec@humbug.org.au or by post to "The HUMBUG Secretary, PO Box 6185, St Lucia QLD 4067". Applications must be received by 18 October 2003. Applications must include:
The information HUMBUG collects will be used only for the selection of the candidates for the programme and will be destroyed after the conference. (We need to keep it until then so we may select another candidate should one of our choices be unable to attend.) Selection and TimelineWe will assess candidates for eligibility based on their applications. The two candidates will then be selected at random from these eligible candidates. We have chosen a random draw as the final step because we cannot think of objective criteria for who would 'benefit the most'. Details of the time, place, and result of the draw will be made available via email to all eligible candidates. The timeline for the competition is:
