07/07/2008 - ZFS Talk
James McPherson, a Senior Kernel Engineer for Sun Microsystems, will be giving a presentation on ZFS at our 12/07 meeting James will discuss the concepts and ideas behind Sun's ZFS filesystem (and a bit about OpenSolaris). He will also demonstrate how ZFS is integrated with some of the other cool features in OpenSolaris such as the in-kernel CIFS server and NFSv4. The presentation will start at 5pm. The rack infrastructure that provides net and power to Humbug's server is undergoing a makeover on Saturday. All services, notably mail and web, will be unavailable from 9am to midday. We're also taking the opportunity to upgrade the Debian install. Humbug will have an end of year holiday season dinner at afk, 616 Stanley Street, Woolloongabba from 6:00 pm on Friday, 21 December. Menu without prices at their website, but most meals are in the $15 to $20 range. They're BYO, and there's a bottle shop just across the road. Please RSVP to Clinton at clinton.roy@gmail.com ASAP. At the meeting on 15th December, Clinton will be giving one of his infamous debriefings of both BarCamp and OSDC. It will start at 6:00 pm. At the meeting on 1 December, James will give a talk describing what GUIDs are and how they're used in Solaris. Another AGM produces another new executive team. Clinton Roy will be giving a talk on the ANTLR parser generator at the HUMBUG meeting on Saturday, 14 July starting at 6pm. The abstract was published in the announcement on the mailing list. HUMBUG is making a bid to host LCA 2009. There is now a Humbug LCA Wiki where you can see the details of the bid, progress reports, and opportunities for volunteers to help. Please have a look and help out where you can. Russell Stuart will be giving a talk on Saturday the 7th of April at 6pm, about the upcoming LCA Bid for 2009. More details on the Talks page. We now have our meeting dates confirmed for the first half of 2007. Members and visitors should note that these meetings are all scheduled to end at 11pm, rather than extending into the following morning. Our Annual General Meeting was held on 9 September 2006 and we elected a new executive. See the details here. The 2006 Annual General Meeting will start at 6:00 pm. Ian Connor from ProjectLounge will deliver a talk about the development of their applications, written using a variety of open source/free software tools. The talk is scheduled for 6:00 pm. The talk will focus on the building of ProjectLounge Lite in Ruby on Rails, an open source web application framework, and how to get started putting together such an application using open source technology (Linux, Apache, FastCGI, MySql and Ruby on Rails). Paul "Rusty" Russell, Australian Linux kernel hacker, is making a flying visit to Humbug this Saturday, giving a talk on the possible consequences of Australia's obligations under the FTA. The talk is expected to begin around six. Members and visitors should note that, although parking restrictions are relaxed on Saturdays, there are still rules that must be followed. Please be sure to read and comply with those rules. Stephen Thorne will deliver a talk on darcs at the meeting on Saturday, 6 May 2006 at 6:00 pm. The talk is scheduled to last 30 minutes, followed by time for questions. Darcs is a distributed revision control system suitable for small to medium projects. Stephen will introduce darcs, explain how to use it, how to admin a darcs repository and how to do simple revision management tasks. The following links might be useful in preparation: darcs home, the darcs wiki, the Wikipedia entry on darcs and the Wikibook Understanding darcs. Andy Fitzsimon will deliver a postmortem of the Libre Graphics Meeting that was held on 17-19 March, 2006 in Lyon, France. Topics covered will include Inkscape, The Gimp and Scribus. The talk will be on this Saturday, 22 April, starting at approximately 5pm and lasting for about an hour. Naaman Campbell will present a talk about running Ubuntu on the Sun Microsystems SunRay thin-client architecture this weekend, 25 March 2006 at 6pm sharp. His talk will include an OpenOffice presentation and a demonstration with "server" and a SunRay thin client. We have removed the webmaster email alias. See the Webmaster contact page for an explanation and for new contact information. Our Annual General Meeting was held on 24 September 2005 and we elected a new executive. The Annual General Meeting has been called for 6:00pm, 24 September 2005. We shall meet in our normal room, Room S201, Hawken Engineering Building, The University of Queensland, St Lucia Campus. We've meet successfully with UQ and expect to have network access for meeting at end of this month. An issue has developed regarding the terms of our network access at meetings. We held an exec meeting this evening and we agreed it would be prudent for the club to forgo network access for the short term.

17/7/2004 - 'Controlling Unwanted Email' talk by Mark Suter
Mark Suter, Club President and regular speaker, will present a talk on
tools and methods for controlling unwanted email. It is proposed that a
panel/Q&A session will be held afterwards. The talk will be held at
5pm on Saturday, 17th of July 2004.
3/7/2004 - Fedora talk by Warren Togami
Warren Togami of Red Hat and Fedora fame is in the country from the US
and is coming to do a HUMBUG talk. The talk will be held at 4pm
(note the time) at the upcoming meeting, on Saturday the 3rd of July 2004.
28/2/2004 - LCA 2004 Debriefing Session
We're holding our second LCA debriefing meeting, where the Queensland
Sunmicrosystemstm regional delegate, and other attendees,
go through their experiences at the conference.
7/10/2003 - Sunmicrosystemstm' Regional Delegate Program
This is a great opportunity for anyone wanting to know what goes on at the conference; we're hoping it'll motivate more people to attend the conference, write a paper for the conference, attempt to win the regional delegate program, and if you're really silly, think about running the conference in Brisbane again!

Arjen Lentz, a technical writer and trainer from MySQL AB will give his
State of the Dolphin talk, in which he describes the many exciting developments
happening in the MySQL development effort.

Tobi Graml will be talking about the march of Linux in is home town
of Munich. The talk will start at 6:00pm.
7/5/2003 - Talk: Red Hat and Internationalisation (i18n)
Paul Gampe from Red Hat has kindly agreed to come in to talk to us about
internationalisation and Red Hat Linux. Paul will cover a variety of topics
including why i18n is required, Red Hat's i18n strategy, and of course,
more-concrete i18n-related technical issues.

28/2/2003 - Tommorrow: GPG Keysigning 6pm, Decompilation Talk 7pm
The March 1st meeting will feature the GPG Keysigning Party followed by

As part of today's festivities Robert Standford will be presenting his 3-hour tutorial on thin clients. See last meetings news item (below) for details.
Next HUMBUG will host the first DSIG for 2002. Robert Stanford will be
presenting a 3-hour tutorial on _Thin Clients on GNU/Linux Using the LTSP_.
22/12/2001 - HUMBUG Meetings continue year round
This is a 3-hour tutorial, where we will be covering all aspects of Thin clients on Linux, including Bootroms, Booting from flash, Building kernels, Installing LTSP, Local applications, Server tuning, Trouble shooting, works in progress and who knows what else. This is an interactive tutorial so you are encouraged to bring a machine along.
HUMBUG Meetings are continuing over Christmas & into the new year.

The University of Queensland is hosting
the tournament of the minds competition and have cancelled all booking's on that
weekend. As a result the Meeting on the 15/9/2001 has been cancelled.
25/7/2001 - August 4 Meeting Cancelled
Our 29 September meeting will be held - the booking has been confirmed. This meeting we will also be holding the Annual General Meeting.
The University of Queensland is holding
its Study Expo
on the Sunday and will be preparing the rooms before hand. As
there will be no rooms available, we have cancelled the meeting.

Tony Joblin, President of ComputerBank Queensland, will be giving a talk

30/3/2001 - Room Change for 31 March 2001 Meeting
Our normal room is being used for the Graduate Australian Medical Schools Admissions Test
(GAMSAT) this weekend. Accordingly, we have booked a different room,
Steele 329,
for the 31 March 2001 Meeting. The meeting will start at the usual time, three pm.
20/3/2001 - Quorum Lowered at SGM
This room change is only for the 31 March 2001 Meeting - the normal room has already been booked for the 14 April meeting.

In an unprecedented move the Decemeber 23 meeting has been canceled in
recognition of the fact that many members actually have lives outside
of HUMBUG and UNIX :-)

There have been some major ``under the hood'' changes to the website, lots more is now automatically
generated, so there should be less mistakes. The most notable change is that the sitemap
is now present on all ``core'' pages. A new section for project groups has been added.
